Sharing what is left of the Aral Sea with Kazakhstan, its northern neighbor, Uzbekistan contains the ancient cities of Samarqand, Bukhara (Bukhoro), Khiva, and Tashkent. It is the most populous central Asian republic and has considerable natural resources. The dictatorship of President Karimov has prevented the spread of Islamic fundamentalism.
