Lying along the southern Himalayas, Nepal was an absolute monarchy until 1990, since when politics has become increasingly turbulent. The mainly agricultural economy depends heavily on the prompt arrival of the monsoon. Hopes for development have been invested in hydropower, despite the adverse impact of large dams. A Maoist insurgency, begun in 1996, threw the country into chaos in 2001.
