The creation of Israel in 1948, in what was then the British mandate of Palestine, fulfilled the Zionist ambition for a Jewish state. Subsequent military victories over its Arab neighbors enabled Israel to annex or occupy additional territory. Tentative hopes for an end to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict were raised by the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in 2004 and the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005.
