The most southerly of the Windward Islands, Grenada also includes the southern Grenadine islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. It became a focus of international attention in 1983 when the US, with token backing from several Caribbean states, mounted an invasion to sever its growing links with Castro's Cuba. It is the world's second-largest nutmeg producer, but the crop was devastated by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
