week 40

A few months ago you though this day would never arrive. In the next few days, your baby will finally be out in the big wide world and, more importantly, in your arms. It is a moment to cherish and the start of a whole new way of life, for you as well as the little person you're about to meet

Your body changes

The final few weeks of pregnancy see the greatest strain on your body, so it is important to get plenty of rest before the baby arrives.

Other changes

You may have some signs of onset of labour, such as:
  • A show - the loss of the mucous plug
  • Slight diarrhoea
  • Contractions (report these to your midwife)

Facts about you:

  • You'll now be having your antenatal checks weekly, or even more frequently if there's any cause for concern.
  • Your weight gain has slowed or stopped since about week 37. In fact, you may lose about 900-1.4kg in the last couple of weeks.
  • Your pelvis may ache, especially when you have to stand or when you've been sitting with your legs crossed, because of the weight of your baby.
  • The weight of your baby may be causing you to leak urine. Keep doing your pelvic floor exercises right up to the birth, and start again as soon as you can afterwards. They really do help.
